General Teaching Council for England

Expert review: ‘Cimex produced a sterling piece of work for the GTC. Their investigations were thorough and diligently executed. Supplementing this work with eye-tracking research definitely helped to illustrate clearly to us where the key issues to address lay. Their final report has been vital in providing the momentum and direction for future website development,’ Website Manager: General Teaching Council.

Brief

Cimex was commissioned by the COI to perform an effectiveness and accessibility review of the General Teaching Council (GTC) website. The purpose of the review was to assess how effectively the GTC website was at fulfilling its objectives.

Solution

A series of expert reviews as well as user testing with eye tracking were carried out by Cimex on the GTC website and its peer websites to assess its effectiveness. In addition, an accessibility review of the site was conducted.

  • The reviews focused on the usability, design and content of the GTC website
  • Additional expert reviews were conducted on websites of similar professional regulators and organisations of similar size to the GTC
  • Using in house eye-tracking facilities, Cimex conducted user-based testing to evaluate the effectiveness of the site’s navigation and information architecture
  • Web accessibility was thoroughly examined using popular assistive software and code validation tools

Result

Cimex followed an evidence based approach for identifying issues and offered a prioritised list for improvements illustrated with suggested page templates. The advice from the report presented by Cimex will be used for a complete redesign or gradual upgrading of the GTC website over time.
