‘We’re only just beginning to realise the potential of mobile technology for public service and Cimex is pleased to be involved with such a progressive project,’ David Hockin, Corporate Director, Cimex.

Directgov launches new 3G mobile website

13 April 2007

Directgov, the government’s flagship digital service, which offers public services all in one place, has today, 12th April 2007, launched a new version of Directgov Mobile.

The new version of the site is designed to work on 3G mobile phones. Simply type www.direct.gov.uk/mobile into your mobile phone browser, select ‘choose version’ and click on ‘enhanced version’.

After developing imode and WAP versions of Directgov, Cimex was approached by Directgov, to develop a 3G version.

Cimex carried out user testing on the imode and WAP versions of the website to inform a new compact HTML version. It was important to visitors that they were able to access the internet on a mobile phone when they needed information or services ‘in a hurry’ and ‘on the move’.

The navigation of the service was improved following usability research and as a result gives visitors quick and easy access to important information while out and about.

The Directgov 3G version is available on all 3G and newer internet enabled mobile phones. Visitors can enter a postcode to search for local information including NHS services, legal advice, councils, and where to access the internet for free. The service includes live travel information, quick guides to learning, money, homes and property, and the latest public announcements including terror alerts and severe weather warnings.

‘Developments in mobile technology provide opportunities for the government to deliver information and services to citizens when they want and how they want it. Cimex has been instrumental in developing a robust, user friendly service for Directgov mobile which will allow us to benefit from 3G technology for the first time,’ Gill Elderfield, Head of Mobile and TV Product, Directgov.

David Hockin, Corporate Director at Cimex says, ‘We’re only just beginning to realise the potential of mobile technology for public service and Cimex is pleased to be involved with such a progressive project.’

Directgov, the government’s flagship digital services brings together the widest range of public service information and services in one place, available on mobile, digital television and the website www.direct.gov.uk. The largest cross government initiative, Directgov joins up central and local government’s service delivery in a way that is easy to use and all in one place for citizens.

Launched in April 2004, the portal now attracts more than 4 million visits a month. The site also provides users with access to government directories, as well as links to relevant third parties who can offer additional trusted advice and support.
