Digital SEN Science 7-11 for blind learners

Cimex developed a world-leading 3D character-led audio environment for the BBC.

Brief: The BBC commissioned Cimex to research and develop creative tools and collaborative resources for the teaching of science at KS2, specifically for the blind and visually impaired learner.

Solution: After in depth research and user testing, Cimex created a world of sound through the development of a 3D audio gaming environment in order to engage the learner and encourage exploration – supporting the building of otherwise difficult to perceive abstract conceptulisation.

The approach provides opportunities for blind and partially sighted pupils to show that they CAN do science equally as well as their sighted peers and provides blind and partially sighted pupils the opportunity to do the same work as the rest of the class.

The central theme for the project was to instill confidence in the learner, encourage social interaction and reinforce the fact that science can be fun!

Key features include:

  • The full set of SEN Science games were tested as stand alone products with a variety of children aged 7 to 11 years old throughout the development process.
  • Practical solutions were applied to the games based on the issues identified during the user testing.
  • The creation of innovative and world leading 3D character-led audio environments.
  • The production of collaborative, generative tools and engines for the development of real-life environments.
  • The exploration of developed technologies across the digital curriculum to maximize accessibility to blind learners.

Result: A global first motivating a pupil to achieve his or her potential regardless of ability.
