BBC jam
‘What was particularly exciting about the opportunity to develop PE was that it just hasn’t been tackled in this way before so we were breaking new ground. A key requisite of the Corporation’s new services was for it to be innovative and distinctive from existing materials in the marketplace,’ Ian Haynes, Learning Director: Cimex
To inspire seven to eleven year-olds to be more active, Cimex used state-of-the-art technology to capture dance movements for a vibrant and richly interactive new BBC resource.
Brief
BBC jam was a £150 million curriculum based broadband learning service designed to encourage 5-16 year olds to explore, learn and create in new ways. Cimex won the first round of pitches to develop a Physical Education resource for 7-11 year olds.
Solution
Applying a user centred design approach (UCD) involving youngsters at every stage of the process; Cimex developed B.A.S.E. a physical education academy which can be explored through an interactive 3D world through which the user can embark on their own personalised learning journeys accessing a diverse range of games and activities.
Highlights include:
- Cimex teamed up with a film special effects company to develop Dance Maker and Gym Tumbler – games which utilise motion capture data allowing the user to create their own dance and gym routines
- Webcam technology was utilised for iPopping – a game that allows the user to interact dynamically with the computer
- Over two hours of interactive video
- All rich media content was made SCORM compliant and fully accessible
Result
‘Its cool!’ says 10-year old user, Mia.
