Widgets are taking the social network sites by storm and provide exciting opportunities for marketers, according to Marketing Week.

If you’re a Facebook user, you’ll definitely have encountered widgets. These are mini applications which can be plugged into a web page or other interface to enhance individuals’ online experience via a single application.

With fun titles like Compare Your Friends, Food Fight, Zombies, Flickr-feeds and Where I’ve been Maps, it’s estimated that over 65 million applications were installed on Facebook in June at an average of 2.5 a user.

But while widgets are definitely an interim marketing technology, argues Marketing Week, they’re worthy of the general excitement surrounding them, given that they provide marketers with an outstanding opportunity to deliver a branded experience rather than just an advertising message.
