How damaging are fake profiles on social networks

Harry Potter actress Emma Watson was disgusted to find out fans have set up fake profiles for her on social networking sites Facebook and MySpace.

Not an overly surprising story, but fake profiles are becoming an increasing problem for UK celebrities.

Both Stephen Fry and Harry Potter actress Emma Watson have been on the receiving end of social network users who have set up false profiles and pretended to be them.

Is it a matter of time before we see a ‘non-celeb’ being duped in some way by a fake profile of a friend or spouse?
