Cimex to reveal ‘alarming’ research at National Crime Mapping Conference

Usability experts are to reveal the full findings of critical crime mapping research at the 7th National Crime Mapping Conference on Friday 8th May 2009.

Cimex is to reveal the full findings of its crime mapping research at the 7th National Crime Mapping Conference on Friday 8th May 2009.

User experience consultants Katerina Tzanidou, Niki Economidou and Talke Klara Hoppmann of Cimex Media will be speaking at the seminar stream: ‘Publishing crime statistics using crime mapping’, delivering a talk entitled ‘Presenting crime maps online: effectiveness, usability and user preferences’.

The talk will reveal further insight into the research by Cimex, the findings of which gained press coverage on influential news sites including www.politics.co.uk.

Cimex’s Customer Insight team looked at the sites of several police forces and general mapping information sites including UpMyStreet as part of the study – and found some services were in danger of leaving some users confused.

‘The government wants the public to work in partnership with the police but in our study we found that crime maps may in fact be damaging this relationship,’ said a Cimex spokesman at the time of the initial report’s release.

‘Where crime maps are not effective at telling us clearly and easily about crime in our area the lack of perceived transparency may actually be counter-productive,’ added the spokesman. ‘Instead of increasing public confidence, certain police authorities may be exacerbating trust issues.’
