The DfES tasked Cimex with developing the information architecture, tailored online content and ongoing CMS management for a new youth focused section of Directgov, the government’s main point of contact with the public.
Brief
The Young People’s Franchise (YPF) is the primary destination for young people visiting the government’s Directgov portal and was developed to address the need for an ‘official’ government website which young people would trust when searching for information and submitting personal details online, including passports and driving licences.
The YPF aims to provide young people with details about government services and information that will help them cope with key milestones in their life. It is Government policy to support young people, cater for their information needs and enable them to make decisions appropriate for them whilst trying to actively promote good lifestyle choices.
Information architecture (IA) and ‘branded’ content was required to direct users to key areas of information throughout the Directgov structure, which includes topic areas such as money, tax and benefits, health, education and learning, motoring and travel.
All content had to conform to Directgov’s technical and editorial style guidelines.
Solution
Cimex worked with the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to develop a range of suitable categories for the franchise, which were then reviewed by young people themselves.
The YPF puts users in touch with Directgov information on a wide range of issues of relevance and interest to young people. Unlike the more independently focused need2know.co.uk, which is geared towards lifestyle issues, the YPF primarily puts young people in touch with Government approved advice and services. Content areas include health, travel, disability, work, learning, your home and community.
All editorial content for the YPF was developed by Cimex’s editorial team which continues to produce and maintain content in accordance with Directgov’s strict editorial guidelines. The team also mastered Directgov’s powerful Content Management System.
Results
The YPF is now well established on the Directgov portal, playing an integral part in the DCSF’s delivery of key information and support for young people. Plans are afoot to develop the youth franchise even further with news and community focused services, giving young people the tools they need to participate in government debate and citizenship.
