‘People can now rely on Directgov for quick and easy access to information on a range of local services while on the move. Research shows this is what the public expects and we are able to meet this demand through joined-up government working, using mobile and the web. Working to make the site available via mobile phones is part of our mission to develop the Directgov offer and put public services and information all in one place,’ Directgov’s Strategy and Marketing Director
Brief
Cimex was commissioned by the COI, on behalf of Directgov, to develop a mobile service for their website. Cimex also manages the Young People’s Franchise area of the site.
Solution
The new WAP version of Directgov mobile utilises the system architecture Cimex built for Directgov i-mode and is an extension of a long term multi-platform strategy.
- The system is powered by one repository of content edited by Directgov that is retrieved by the display system as XML. This is processed by an appropriate XSL stylesheet and sent to the browsing device.
- To deploy the WAP development, Cimex created a WAP ‘flavour’ of the XSL stylesheet, outputting WML (Wireless Markup Language) that is compatible with all mobile handset browsers.
- Cimex undertook extensive testing and a review of the content and administration system to ensure all output met the strict WML (WAP) standards, enabling the site to work on all handsets.
